Howlite - the calming stone

If you've been on Instagram you know that marble has been popping up in all the fashion bloggers overlays. It's a huge trend - it looks luxuriousness and classy. Howlite in bracelets is very similar. Crisp white with gorgeous  grey veining.  We predict Howlite bracelets will be the next trend with fashion bloggers and Instragram sweethearts.

The GEOlogy of Howlite

Howlite (Ca2B5SiO9(OH)5) s a calcium borosilicate hydroxide mineral that usually occurs in sedimentary rock formations. It is often a confusing mineral to classify. The silicon atom in its formula would normally require its classification as a silicate mineral. However, some classification schemes prefer to place howlite with other borate minerals in the carbonates class because it has five borons to only one silicon and its character and formation are more in line with other borate minerals. Howlite has a chalky white marble-like appearance that can be pure white or have  gray or brown veins running through it - gorgeous! Howlite is found in continental evaporite deposits with other borate and evaporite minerals. It forms in nodules that appear like the heads of cauliflower.

History and Geography Of Howlite

Howlite was discovered in 1868 in Nova Scotia, Canada and is named after the Canadian geologist and mineralogist Henry How. Gypsum minder brought it to his attention as it was nuisance since it was harder to mine than the gypsum they were after. Henry How named the mineral “silico-boro-calcite” after it's make-up but James Dwight Dana, an American geologist and mineralogist, later give it the name Howlite. Deposits of iHowlite has since been discovered in California, USA.

Howlite is a porous stone that can absorb dye well, which is why it’s often used to imitate other gems, such as turquoise. However, we love natural stones at Aura Stone Designs and do not sell dyed gemstones.
