5 things you should know about essential oils

Courtney Hall, from Toronto’s coco botanicals, makes hand-crafted essential oil blends and bath salts. Many people are interested in essential oils but don’t know where to start or go about it. Here Courtney swipes aside the mysterious aura around essential oils and with her in-depth knowledge, share five things you should know about essential oils.

All my essential oil blends are original and were created to treat my own personal ailments. As a full-time student with two part-time jobs, lack of sleep, headaches and a bit of anxiety was frequent.  I have worked diligently to perfect coco botanicals’ scents, effectiveness, and potency. Talking to people at markets and with clients, it is evident that there is a great deal of interest in essential oils but also a general lack of knowledge and uncertainty were to start. Let’s start to fix that!

1. Not all essential oils are created the same

You can find essential oils at the health food store, pharmacy, and even some grocery stores – but not all essential oils are the same quality. Sure it may be cheaper to purchase an oil from Wal-Mart but are you certain of its purity? The reason it may be cheaper is because the oil is extracted through a chemical distilling process or may contain unnecessary fillers. Always read the labels before purchasing. At coco botanicals, we blend pure essential oils with a fractionated coconut carrier oil for safe topical use.

2. A little can go a long way

It can take pounds of plant to create a small bottle of essential oil; for example, it takes 10,000 roses to fill one 5ml bottle. Essential oils are very concentrated and so most need to be diluted with a carrier oil. At coco botanicals we use high-quality coconut oil for all our essential oils. This is because some pure essential oils are too strong to be applied directly to the skin, we like coconut oil because it’s hydrating and doesn’t leave the skin feeling oily. Even with a carrier oil, a few drops in the bathtub or rubbed on your temple is often all that is needed.

3. Pick a blend that suits your needs

If you’re just starting with essential oils, it’s great to start with a blend of essential oils to treat a particular need. For example, our Headease blend is great for headaches. It contains peppermint rosemary and lavender – it’s so soothing and you can feel the peppermint oil start to work instantly! If you don’t suffer from headaches, this blend is a great pick-me-up! Using a professionally made blend of essential oils is a great way to get benefits from multiple essential oils all at once.

4. Don’t doubt their healing ability

There always seems to be a sense of doubt if someone is unfamiliar with essential oils. What I like to remind them is that these oils have been healing since before medicine. There is no placebo effect that is going to take over once you’ve applied an oil, it works, and what you’re experiencing is all natural. How great is that! At coco botanicals we are all about encouraging natural healing and wellness.

5. There are multiple ways to use essential oils

There is no one way to use essential oils but each blend does come recommendations that should be followed. For example, some should not be rubbed on your skin or used in a diffuser – you should always follow any directions that come with essential oils. You can use a few drops of our Anxiety Ease in a diffuser, rub our Headease blend on your temples, or use Morning Mist as a post shower facial. You can even rub essential oils on lava stone Aura bracelets –you can rub a drop or two of oil on the porous stone and diffuse on the go!

I hope that helps lift the aura of mystery around essential oils a bit for you! Come learn more by visiting coco botanicals on Instagram or Facebook.
